Our puppies are born in our home where they are able to be handled and interacted with on a daily basis, also receiving early neurological stimulation (ENS) through the "Bio Sensor" program: http://breedingbetterdogs.com/article/early-neurological-stimulation. As they grow, exposure to other dogs, cats, different sounds, flooring, and situations ensure our puppies get off to the best start in life possible.
Schöne Stadt puppies are dewormed at regular intervals and will have had one or two vaccinations before leaving for their new homes. We begin feeding moist kibble around 3 wks of age, along with raw ground beef, and Vitamin C.
Although all of our breeding dogs have certified hips and elbows with ancestors that are also certified, environmental factors can play a part in the incidence of hip dysplasia. So to help in the prevention of dysplasia we recommend supplementing your puppy's diet with Vitamin C, which is important for the development of bones, muscles, and connective tissue. I have been advocating this to our puppy buyers since I first read Wendell Belfield's book How to Have a Healthier Dog: The Benefits of Vitamins and Minerals for Your Dog's Life Cycles back in 1997 or 1998. Dr. Belfield was a pioneer in Vitamin C research and supplementation for dogs and cats. He had great success in treating a variety of illnesses and preventing hip dysplasia with Vitamin C. The dosages are: 500mg daily until 4 months old then increasing to 1000mg, and finally to 2000mg daily until 18-24 months of age. Vitamin C is virtually harmless so don't be worried about overdosing. It can cause diarrhea so if this happens just decrease the dose slightly. We recommend a buffered C.
Puppies should be taken off puppy food no later than 4-5 months of age and switched to a high quality adult food. This can aid in keeping your puppy from growing too fast and thus putting him at risk for panosteitis (growing pains) and joint issues. Pay attention to the ingredient list, and choose a food with the least amount of fillers and beef, chicken, lamb, or some other type of quality meat as the main ingredient. We highly recommend a raw food diet for your dog once grown, but care must be taken to make sure you are feeding the proper proportions of meat, bones, and organs. A simple google search will provide you with a wealth of information on this subject. Keeping your pup lean is also a crucial factor in the development of healthy joints.
Please do not allow your puppy to do any major jumping, such as jumping high to catch a ball or jumping out of a high vehicle, until he is fully grown as this could damage his joints while they are still developing. Also be careful with certain agility exercises that would have the pup moving in an unnatural way, at least until his hip joints have set. Take your pup for short walks where he trots or gaits instead of galloping; this strengthens the muscles in the hindquarter. Swimming is the ideal exercise as it puts no pressure on the joints. Do not over exercise your puppy.
We strongly advise against early spay and neuter. If you must spay or neuter your Schöne Stadt German Shepherd, we recommend waiting until he/she is physically mature or after two years of age. Here are two informative articles on this subject: http://www.alabamacaninecoalition.org/earlyspayconsiderations.pdf

Early socialization is EXTREMELY important for German Shepherd puppies. From the time you take your puppy home to around sixteen weeks of age is a critical time period for his social and psychological development. If possible, join a training club or attend obedience classes as this exposes your pup to new surroundings, animals, people, and sounds. If you cannot attend classes, then it is very important to take your pup with you and introduce him to new places, people, and animals regularly as this is invaluable to his socialization.
With excellent genetics, early stimulation, and love, we have laid the foundation, but it will be up to you to continue with the proper socialization, training, and care that your puppy will need to live up to his potential.
